Mint Solutions from Stuart Canvas
The Challenge
In the Spring of 2008, the Royal Mint experienced one of the worst fires in the organisations history with large areas of the storage facilities in South Wales destroyed. Not only did the fire cause significant damage to the buildings, but it was feared that the resulting disruption could extend into ongoing operations for many years to come.
One of the principal areas of concern was that the nickel bar and machinery storage area was so severely damaged that the nickel bars and machinery had to be moved to another area. The only feasible area was outside, however the materials needed to be protected against the extremes of weather if the organisation was to effectively continue to mint money for its UK and international customers.
The Solution
The Royal Mint approached Stuart Canvas to see if they were able to provide appropriate covers for the 1000 nickel bar storage pallets. The covers needed to protect the nickel from all weathers while still enabling the pallets to be moved around easily by forklift trucks.
Stuart Canvas immediately sent a team to measure for the required covers in order to turn the project around in as quick a time as possible. Back at Stuart Canvas’s headquarters in Warrington the team began to produce the weatherproof covers from black reinforced PVC.
Result
In less than two weeks Stuart Canvas has supplied the Royal Mint with all the covers it needed to protect the nickel bars while stored outside. As a result, the Royal Mint was able to continue to manufacture and developed no backlog of work accumulated as a result of the fire.
